Malaysian telco Maxis has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and a greener future by showcased its progress in emissions reduction, and its initiatives to expand adoption of renewable energy across Malaysia.

The firm said in a statement on last Wednesday that it aims to integrate environmental benefits through improvements in its network and operations while empowering consumers with accessible green energy.

With a customer base of 10.4 million subscribers and 780,000 homes, the firm said it is strategically positioned to improve access to green energy for consumers across Peninsular Malaysia through its Maxis Home Solar solution.

By offering robust customer support with a low upfront payment, it said the firm empowers people to lower their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future while benefiting from reduced electricity costs.

Guided by ISO 14001, the company optimizes energy use and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through annual reduction strategies.

Since 2023, the firm began integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into field operations to support cleaner energy use and lower carbon emissions.

Additionally, it has increased its solar energy adoption, including the installation of charging stations for its EVs at seven Technical Operations Centers (TOCs).

By implementing off-grid solar systems at rural base stations in Peninsular and East Malaysia, it has also reduced reliance on diesel generators.

“Managing our environmental footprint and enhancing operational efficiency are vital to Maxis’ long-term sustainability,” said Patrick Er, Director of Maxis Green Solutions and Chief People and Transformation Officer of Maxis.

“Besides mitigating risks, these measures also enhance value for our customers and stakeholders,

“Through our solar initiatives for both our customers and own operations, we support the National Energy Transition Roadmap’s goal of achieving 70 percent renewable energy installed capacity by 2050,” he added.

Additionally, Maxis said it has improved energy efficiency at its base stations and TOCs by replacing old equipment and systems with updated ones.

With the implementation of Centralized Self Organizing Network (C-SON) technology, it noted unused equipment can be powered down, while high-efficiency rectifiers can reduce power loss and heat.

According to the firm, decommissioning old equipment and consolidating the core network optimizes space and lowers energy use in data centers and power plants.

As a result, energy usage at network sites increased by only 0.25 percent despite expansion of network sites, leading to lower emission intensity.

On an ongoing basis, Maxis said it has been enhancing its facilities to reduce office emissions.

These enhancements, such as installing LED lighting and cable upgrades, enabled the company to reduce its office emissions by 8 percent year on year in 2024.

The firm has also introduced public transport subsidies for employees, encouraging them to reduce their carbon footprint.

It highlighted that Maxis’ sustainability efforts reflect its ongoing commitment to creating sustainable value.

It added that looking ahead, the firm remains dedicated to addressing climate change through ongoing initiatives to build a resilient and sustainable future for all.
